INSIGHTS: Doctors’ Perception On Training Their Hospital Staff

The Healthcare sector today is undergoing rapid transformation in terms of quality service delivery, technology, operations, workforce management, etc. Hospital staff is the backbone of a hospital’s day to day operations and one of the biggest assets for patient-centric care.

Therefore, organisations need to plan and provide training to their staff in order to increase their knowledge, manage patients, doctors and departments better and improve performance.

Objective: Determining doctors’ perception on training their hospital staff

A total of 111 doctors participated in the survey – Radiologists (32%), Dentists (19%), General Surgeons (13%), Gynaecologist (12%) and Others (24%)

  1. All doctors agreed that the hospital staff should receive regular training sessions

  2. Most of the doctors (49%) stated that they would recommend quarterly training programmes to be organized by the hospitals, followed by bi-annually (28%) and annually (22%)

  3. When asked how training can benefit hospital staff, 19% of the doctors stated that it can help in improving their work-related skill set, followed by helping them perform better (18%), increasing knowledge about their work (17%), improving communication and interpersonal skills (17%) and decision making and management skills (15%), becoming aware of their future roles and responsibilities (14%)

  4. 40% of the doctors stated that training the hospital staff would improve the performance of the healthcare organisation by providing quality care and better patient experience, and by improving overall staff productivity (25%) and professional satisfaction (19%)

  5. The majority of the doctors (97%) stated that the Indian government should implement effective training programs to improve the success and sustainability of government hospitals

In our survey, all doctors agreed that the hospital staff should receive regular training sessions which would help improve the performance of the healthcare organisation by providing quality care, better patient experience and improve overall staff productivity.

Also, a high degree of empathy toward patients is an important factor for all healthcare professionals to build patient’s trust and compliance. Therefore, healthcare organizations should have training sessions for their staff to keep them motivated and cultivate empathy towards patients for better healthcare outcomes and patient satisfaction.
