New Air Filters For SARS- CoV-2 Virus

With businesses reopening, controlling the spread of the virus in air-conditioned spaces was urgent and considered smart. The research suggested that the virus remained in the air for about 3 hours and filtering the air seemed like a better plan. In collaboration with a few other scientists, researchers from the University of Houston have designed a “catch and kill” air filter that can trap the virus responsible for COVID-19, killing it instantly. The researchers have reported that the virus tests at the Galveston National Laboratory found 99.8% of the novel SARS-CoV-2, was killed in a single go-through the filter made from the available nickel foam which was heated to 200 degrees Centigrade(392 degrees Fahrenheit). It also killed the other 99.9% of the anthrax spores at the national lab, which is run by the University of Texas Medical Branch. Scientists at Medistar knew the virus can’t survive temperatures which are above 70 degrees Centigrade (158 degrees Fahrenheit) so the researchers decided to use a heated filter, about 200 C. With this, they were able to kill the virus almost instantly. The researchers have called for a phased roll-out of the device beginning with the high priority venues such as hospitals, healthcare facilities, public transit venues like aeroplanes.
