COVID-19 pandemic taking the world by a storm

Ever since the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) 18 years ago, a large number of diseases have been discovered in their host, bats. SARS-CoV-2 is the new virus responsible for the outbreak of the current respiratory illness known to affect almost all countries in the world. On 12 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) named this virus as the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019‐nCoV). On 11 February 2020, the WHO officially named the disease caused by the 2019‐nCoV as coronavirus disease (COVID‐19). Currently, the world is witnessing the progress of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The number of confirmed cases, due to poor resources is still relatively small, the availability of testing kits are also low and the number of COVID-19 cases is expected to exponentially rise in upcoming weeks. The capacity and the resources of the healthcare system to manage the virus is limited, and the low availability of the protective equipment means that these important staffs are being disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The breaking of this hierarchy of workers would result in high direct and indirect mortality since the healthcare industry would be affected.
