Chronicle of Insights: Have You Ever Prescribed Any Herbal/ Ayurvedic Medicine To A Patient In Your

There has been an increase in the consumption of herbal supplements as an alternative to western medicine that is being prescribed by doctors themselves in the recent past. Going by the trend we conducted a survey to unveil the true story directly from the horse’s mouth.

A survey was conducted on the WhiteCoats Network to find an answer to the question, “Have you ever prescribed any herbal/ Ayurvedic medicine to a patient in your day-to-day practice?” between 3rd July to 6th July 2018.

Respondents of the survey included 52 doctors from varying specialities. The options to answer the question included: ● Yes ● No

The respondents included General practitioners (17.3%), Anesthesiologists (9.6%), Pediatricians (7.69%), Radiologists (5.76%), Cardiologists (3.84%), Dentists (3.84%), Dermatologists (3.84%), Dieticians (3.84%), and others (40.3%).

The response rate for the answers was as follows: Yes: 38.46% (n=20) No: 61.53% (n=32)

Of these those responding that they had prescribed herbal/ Ayurvedic medicines to a patient in their practice included: (Yes Responders) ● General Practitioners (15%) ● Paediatricians (10%) ● Radiologists (10%) ● Dermatologists (10%) ● General Surgeons (5%) ● Family Practitioners (5%) ● Diabetologists (5%) ● Andrologists (5%) ● Pharmacologists (5%) ● Otolaryngologists (5%) ● Physiotherapists (5%) ● Ayurvedic (5%) ● Other (10%)

Those responding that they had never prescribed herbal/ Ayurvedic medicines to a patient in their practice included: (No Responders) ● General Practitioners (18.75%) ● Anesthesiologists (15.62%) ● Cardiologist (6.25%) ● Dentist (6.25%) ● Dietician (6.25%) ● Pediatrician (6.25%) ● General surgeon (3.12%) ● Internist (3.12%) ● Acupuncturists (3.12%) ● Pulmonologists (3.12%) ● Radiologists (3.12%) ● Emergency Medicine (3.12%) ● Others (21.87%)

It was observed in the survey that the majority of the doctors had not prescribed herbal/ Ayurvedic medicines in their practice. But a substantial amount of doctors did so.

Herbal / Ayurvedic medicines have known to exist since prehistoric times. They have known to have many health benefits and could be prescribed to the patients, but with utmost care.
